Jiang Ji Traditional Hainanese Chicken Rice @ 745 Havelock Road

It is an honour that Bobcat pointed silverchef and myself to the pioneer of Singapore Chicken Rice. Mr. Kiang Joon Toh was the pioneering batch of chefs that started Chatterbox Chicken Rice @ Mandarin Hotel. He even had to bring his expatriate chef around Singapore to taste chicken rice before getting the approval to include in Chatterbox's menu.

He once operated in Rasa Singapura off Tanglin Road in the 80s next to the Singapore Handicraft Centre . It was among the many experiences he had accumulated.

Sergeant Kiang got his nickname as he started from the army in Ulu Pandan Camp.

According to Sergeant Kiang, the most important aspect to a good chicken rice is the chilli dip. And I must say, his chilli is fierce but not repelling and compliments the taste of his chicken and rice.

His display shelf is not full as now his business is brisk and most importantly he cooks on location and his chicken are prepared based on demand. Prices range from $2.50, $3.00 and $3.50 if you want your chicken served separately. Half a chicken is $10, while a complete chicken is $20. The chicken rice is served with minced ginger, dark soy sauce and chilli.

Hong Xiang Coffee Shop which Jiang Ji resides is scheduled to close in mid March for renovation which is pending Authority approval.

  1. Hi Ken,
This morning, Yahoo also featured Makansutra's Blog post and that also generated some renewed interest from their online readers..

For those wanting directions to this stall.. here are some information. Hope that helps:
From Zion Rd, turn left at the Chinese Temple to the inner Havelock Road (not the main Havelock Road). Along this Havelock Road, drive after you see the Teochew Porridge (before turning into Beo Crescent FC), you see URA parking lots and Liang Kee Restaurant at 737 Havelock Road. Hong Xiang Eating House at 745 Havelock Rd is the last... corner coffee shop with the Yellow signboard and Green CARLSBERG green beer signboard right in front of the end motorcycle parking lots before turning into Blk 44A MSCP and HDB Blk 50.
    Those driving there: GPS Coordinates: N01° 17.382' E103° 49.632'

  4. Blackswan, Cool to have found a ChatterBox fan. Some of my colleagues tried out Jiang Ji and gave it a thumbs up but without setting their wallet by $30. :)

    Dear Fans,
Tomorrow (29/3/11) will be Jiang Ji's last day of business at Hong Xiang eating house as renovation work kicks in for one month or so.

However, we will be relocating to a shop house, just few steps away from the eating house, in light of offering new dishes to more customers. The grand opening of our new store will be in mid May with date yet to be confirmed.

We will post an update when the date is confirmed! =)

Thanks for your support throughout and we hope to see you again when Jiang Ji reopen.
